Itinerary
Quito │ Pasochoa │ Rumiñahui │ Cotopaxi │ Quito
Today you will head south to the Pasochoa Volcano where your trekking trip begins. During the ascent to the top you will enjoy the view of the surrounding peaks of Antisana, Rumiñahui, and Cotopaxi. In the crater you can see the protected area of the Pasochoa forest. From the top you will proceed to walk along the edge of the inactive volcano’s crater to the south. In this area you have a possibility for bird-watching before descending to the valley to your hostel.
After breakfast you will drive to the Cotopaxi National Park until you reach the high plains and the Limpiopungo Lake (3,800m/12,467ft). Rumiñahui is a 4,720m (15,486ft) high inactive volcano. After following a path with changing altitudes you reach the peak of Rumiñahui. After the descent you will drive to the mountain shelter Tambopaxi and stay there overnight.
In the early morning you will drive up to an elevation of 4,500m (14,763ft). From there you will ascend approximately 300m (984ft) to the José Ribas Refuge. Once you reach the refuge you can refuel with a hot beverage. After lunch you will hike up to the glacier border that is situated at 5,000m (16,404ft) and enjoy the view. In the afternoon you will return to Quito.
