Welcome to the northern part of Patagonia! You will already be expected at the airport in Puerto Montt and brought to your hotel in Puerto Varas. The rest of the day is at your free disposal.
After breakfast you will pick up your rental car at the hotel, with which you will explore the northern Carretera Austral for the next few days. You will leave Puerto Varas heading south to the National Park Alerce Andino. The Alerce Andino Park is best known for its Patagonian cypresses (alerces) which can reach a height of up to 50m and a trunk diameter of up to 5m. You have to choose between two park entrances, depending on the hike you want to do. You will stay the night in the small village of Lenca.
Today’s drive is always along the coast. You even have to cross the fjord with a small ferry. After about 2 hours you will reach Hornopiren. Here is also the entrance to Hornopiren National Park. From here the Lago Pinto Concha hike starts, which is a 14km hike when complete. The park offers with its dense rainforest habitat for rare species like the small deer Pudu or the Chilean wild cat. You will spend the night in Hornopiren.
This day begins right away with one of the highlights of your trip. You will take a ferry across the beautiful fjords of Patagonia, always along the coastline to Caleta Gonzalo. Arrived in Caleta Gonzalo you are already in the middle of the national park Pumalin. The park was founded by the private person Douglas Tompkins and later in 2017 given as a present to the Chilean state. The rest of the day is at your free disposal in Caleta Gonzalo.
Today you have the whole day at your disposal to explore the National Park Pumalin on one of its numerous hikes. You will spend the night once again in Caleta Gonzalo
Today you continue south on the Carretera Austral. We recommend a stop in Corcovado National Park to do the Ventisquero Yelcho hike.
Today one of the most popular hikes on the northern Carretera Austral is waiting for you. The hike takes you to the viewpoint Ventisquero Colgante from where you have a spectacular view of the glacier and its waterfalls.
On today’s stage you drive another 200km on the Carretera Austral to Coyhaique. On the way some nice resting places and photo motives wait for you. If you have some time available, it is also worth to take a break in the small fishing village Puerto Cisnes
On the last day of your trip, you will drive from Coyhaique to Balmaceda Airport, where you will drop off your rental car and begin your onward travel/departure.
